The manufacture of Moroccan slippers, also called “babouches”, is a continuous process. It begins with the collection and sorting of raw animal skins (goat, cow and camel skin), then cleaning, drying and dyeing until it reaches the level of flexibility necessary to be more useful for what is called “the Balgha”.
Fez is one of the largest centers of trade in slippers and handicrafts. In Fez, a variety of Moroccan slippers are manufactured. The manufacture of an exemplary Balgha depends on the quality of the raw materials used and the tools employed in the process.

“There are two kinds of Balgha: the traditional Moroccan slippers that pass through traditional tanneries during the craft process, and the modern Moroccan slippers that are produced by machines,” said one of the traders in Fez in a video published by Maghreb Arab Press (MAP). The traditional method of crafting a handcrafted product is still the most sold, and the most popular because it meets the needs of buyers.
Various cultures and civilizations have visited or crossed Morocco over the centuries, and they have all left a particular impact on traditional Moroccan clothing. They all appear to have played a role in the creation of the elegant Moroccan Fassi slippers, which are one of the most recognizable elements of Moroccan cultural and traditional clothing.
